Deer Park

Deer Park

Yet another place to visit in the Lake Gardens area is the Deer Park, which comprises several local varieties of deer. The species of hinds, does, fawns and other smaller species provide the traveler with breathtaking sights as they roam the sprawling valley. At the edge of the park near the stream, you will find the sights of the mouse deer, which is the world's smallest hoofed animal.

Much to the visitor's delight, some of these friendly deer will usually come close to be fed, even as you watch them. There could have been no other spot that could be dedicated to these gentle, intelligent creatures. A well-chosen serene habitat is ideally suited to these species. Perhaps, the most famous deer of the country, the rainforest mouse deer or kancil is likely to be spotted out here. This is a primitive animal, which finds mention in the legends, folktales and history. One of the narratives includes the founding of Malacca.

In AD 1400, the exiled prince Parameswara stopped beside a river when he saw a white mouse deer turn on his hunting dogs. This he saw as a metaphor for the place where the weak could vanquish the strong and set up a settlement, which he named after the Malacca tree where he had stopped to rest.
