You can take the North-South Expressway while traveling to Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis. It takes about six hours to drive from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Kedah and seven hours to Kuala Perlis. From these places you can take ferries to reach Langkawi. As Langkawi is an island, it is more easily accessible by water than any other means of transport. So even if you travel by car or bus, you have to take a ferry to Langkawi.

By Car- If you are driving from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or Johor Bahru, you will have to follow the indicating the nearest Jetty Terminal. The signage age on the roads clearly indicate the correct highway exits. After you reach Kedah, ensure that you follow the signs for ‘Alor Setar Selatan’ and ‘Langkawi’. Once you reach at Kuala Perlis or Kuala Kedah, you may leave behind your car at a private car park by depositing a small amount of money(RM8.00/per day).

Once you reach Lankaswi, you also rent a car at Kuah town or at the airport. The most popular cars which you may rent are the Proton and Perdua cars that are manufactured in Malayasia. The roads of Langkawi are superb and you can drive smoothly as there is very less traffic. You can really enjoy the scenic beauty of this island while you drive at your own will. The only two things you need while driving a car in Langkawi are a valid driving license and a map of the place. You must keep in mind while driving that cars in Langkawi are right hand drive and it is compulsory to fasten your seat belts.

By Bus- A large number of buses plies daily from KL to Alor Setar and Kuala Kedah. Normally six hours are taken by Express buses to reach. The Buses from KL leave from either Hentian Duta Terminal or the Puduraya. Generally the bus fare from KL to Kuala Perlis is approximately RM33 and from KL to Alor Star is RM30 (one-way). At both these points car parks are available.

By Motorbike -You can also rent a motorbike for reasonable fares. It is quite easy riding a motorcycle across the Langkawi roads. However please ensure that you wear a helmet as it the law of the island.
