Kitesurfing in Essaouira
Essaouira is one of the most attractive towns on the south-west coast of Morocco. The city exudes undeniable charm and lures tourists with its expansive sandy beaches, shuttered houses, art galleries, wood workshops, fishermen and colorful boats.Being a coastal town, Essaouira is considered a paradise for various wind-sports, especially kite surfing. The vast, sandy bay and the strong winds in the area provide perfect opportunities for kitesurfing in Essaouira. The beach stretches for three kilometers and there is no current or reef. There are no separate zones for kite-surfing because the water provides ample room for both. The sea at Essaouira offers both flat water and waves.
Many kite-surfing professionals come to Essaouira to provide training to novices and kite-surfers. During the summer months, the beginner's courses are generally held in the first half of the day, when the wind is not very strong. Trained kite-surfers can head for spots like Mouly Bouzarktoune and Sidi Kaoki which lie further to the south.
During the summer months of June-August, the big difference between land and sea temperatures causes the trade winds to accelerate, thereby creating ideal conditions for both beginners as well as advanced kite-surfers. But in autumn and winter, the winds can swing round and come from the left, throwing up challenging conditions for kitesurfing in Essaouira.
