Zaouia of Moulay Idriss II Fez
A Zaouia is a traditional Muslim monastery and school. The Zaouia of Moulay Idriss II contains the remains of Moulay Idriss II who is the son of the founder of the Idrisid dynasty and had himself founded the city of Fez. Moulay Idriss I was the grandson of prophet Mohammed and was the one to convey Islam to the country of Morocco.
This building is one of the holiest in the city and attracts thousands of Muslims from all over the world. Only the Muslims are allowed to enter the holy shrine. The non-Muslims are allowed to pass the immediate threshold but not further than that. However, it is almost impossible to have a glimpse of the saint's tomb since it is always shrouded by crowds of women who pray and offer incense sticks and candles to the saint's soul. You will find several devotees thronging the gates of the building. Some pray on suppliant knees while others give offerings. The building has two doors and there are wooden beams on the streets that lead to these doors. You will find the outside walls of the building lined by innumerable vendors who sell incense sticks and other articles to the pilgrims.
