Neighborhood Week in Christchurch

Neighborhood Week in Christchurch

Neighborhood Week is a week-long celebration for the cause of getting to know the people who live close to you. During the Neighborhood Week, events like barbecues, street parties, shared dinners, working bees, Halloween parties, coloring competitions, family fun days, children’s days, fairs, galas and neighborhood planting days are organized. The credit for the success of Neighborhood Week in Christchurch goes to its several sponsors including the Christchurch City Council, Neighborhood Support Canterbury and Sea Cruises. A small subsidy is available through some of the city’s Community Boards to aid with these events.

Features of Neighborhood Week in Christchurch

Neighborhood Week is a festival that celebrates the unique and diverse flavor that is characteristic of every individual community.
The purpose behind the Neighborhood Week is to reveal the role of neighborhood in helping to address issues like loneliness, fear of crime, a lack of security and isolation.
Neighborhood Week was held for the first time in 1998 and the brain behind the entire thing was the Shirley-Papanui Community Board.
Since then, it has grown to the point that it is now being promoted annually by the Christchurch City Council and nationwide by Neighborhood Support New Zealand.
The Christchurch Neighborhood Week Joint Committee works closely with Neighborhood Support New Zealand.
The wide range of events and activities include inviting the neighbors for a barbecue, organizing a street party, having a community open day, holding a street fair, getting everyone together for a neighborhood sports day, arranging party in the park for the local kids, planning for a street planting or adding some plants to the local park.
And, this is not all. There is still a lot you can do for your neighborhood.
You can hire a skip and clean up your street, organize a garage sale, hold a Halloween party or just get together for a karaoke or for a wine and snacks evening.
You can take part in the lucky prize draw to win a Lyttelton Harbor cruise with Sea Cruises.
You will get the entry forms at the Council offices, Service Centers and libraries.
