Christchurch is an absolute art lover’s heaven. There is enough truth in the statement because Christchurch is home to some of the celebrated art galleries in the country. The Salamander Gallery in Christchurch is one such art gallery devoted to feature the numerous paintings and allied works in printmaking and sculpture by distinguished artists of the Pacific and New Zealand respectively.

The Salamander Gallery came into being in the 1970’s only after the Canterbury University was shifted to a new site. Initially, the Salamander Gallery was a part of the Physics Department of the old Canterbury. The gallery however did not exist before and is a later addition to the building. During its beginning days, the Salamander Gallery only served the purpose of being a workshop and was a part of the Arts Center Complex. It showcased the original printmaking works.

The Salamander Gallery is located within the Arts Center premises.

In the present scenario, the Salamander Gallery functions as a dealer in art work and are involved in dealing with paintings and sculptures.

The Gallery is sufficient in itself. With its appropriate infrastructure, the Salamander Gallery houses a small, well ventilated space to put up the paintings, works on paper and sculpture works for show.

At a time of exhibitions, the Salamander Gallery features the work of two or more artists. The displays generally belong to either the modern class of art or to the contemporary genre.

The Salamander Gallery with its two respective galleries and stockrooms are home to around 1600 sculptures, paintings and original works belonging to 50 of New Zealand’s famed artists.

The artists whose prestigious creations are featured at the galleries consist of names like Liam Davidson, Gavin Bishop, Graham Sydney, Andrew Craig, Barbara Graham, and many more. The salamander Gallery takes pride in acting as the home gallery for Y-H Kwon and consists of around 30 of his eminent works.
