Sign of the Takahe Christchurch
It was actually the dream of the owners of Sign of the Takahe, Christchurch, Pawan and Delia Kalia, to have restored the restaurant to its fair place at the heart of the vivacious society of Cashmere. They took over the ownership of Sign of the Takahe in January 2004 and started sharing their passion and interest for this thrilling venture. Customers coming here are advised to feel free to pop in and say hi to the staff. Have an experience of Dining in the Finest Tradition at this Christchurch restaurant.Using equipments and comparatively ancient tools recovered and borrowed from all over Canterbury, the architecture shaped the fine detailed carving in both wood and stone that characterize the Sign of the Takahe, Christchurch. Examples of this detailed workmanship include:
- The Gothic tracery portico in the doorway lounge
- The wonderful feature is the fireplace in the main dining room, which is an accurate copy of the one in Haddon Hall, Derbyshire, England
- The huge kauri beams which span the lounge, were recouped from a previous bridge across the Hurunui River
The remarkable set of heraldry put up inside, represents the coats of arms of many of the early Canterbury settler families, governors- general and prime-ministers. In brief, Sign of the Takahe, Christchurch is the testament to the innovative spirit, vitality and originality of early New Zealand.
It is fairly clear to anybody paying a visit to Sign of the Takahe that the chief chef is tremendously passionate about what he prepares. He thinks of his love for cookery to be like a marriage... "You're in it for life, and it’s not to be taken lightly".
As a proud New-Zealander the main chef is eager to showcase the very best of New Zealand cuisine—“Despite our geographical location at the bottom of the world, in terms of culinary standards we’re near the top. We’re blessed with excellent ingredients to work with. The quality of our beef and lamb is world-renowned, and our abundance of seafood is tremendous. And just look at our out-standing choice of exciting wines we have to accompany it all.”
