Akaroa is a historic town located on the Banks Peninsula in the Canterbury area of the South Isle of New Zealand. Akaroa lies about 85 kms from the Christchurch city and is popularly known as Riviera of Christchurch owing to its bays and cerulean waters.
In the past Akaroa was the erstwhile site of the French and British settlements. The French were the first settlers in Akaroa before the British officially established their suzerainty over New Zealand. Till date the French influence has not waned in the town and the main streets of the town have still retained the French heritage. You can still find some old French architectural edifices that tell tales about their bygone days. The Akaroa town breathes out colonial air.
