Cathedral Caves New Zealand
Mysterious, stupendous, charismatic and attractive, that's how the Cathedral caves New Zealand can be described. The Catlins coast, where it is located is famous not only for its exotic collection of fauna , the Cathedral caves are also a landmark of it. The uniqueness of the cave lies in the fact that the two caves are linked with each other within the cliff. One of the caves has a thirty meter i.e. hundred feet high ceiling. Its called the Cathedral caves because of its similarity with the formation of a cathedral. Enter through the door of one cave and emerge out of the other. The height of the caves makes your voice echo inside it. The echoing of the voice gives a strange feeling of satisfaction. And for the bathroom singers , this is the best spot to test the pitch of your voice. Don't forget to look up, or you miss the astounding formation of the caves.
The caves are situated at the northern end of the Waipati Beach in Catlins. Park your car at the end of the logging road and walk for about twenty minutes through popdocarp and kamahi forest over a metalled track.
You have to keep in mind the sea conditions before going to Cathedral Caves, because the gates of the caves are opened and closed two hours before and after the low tide. A fee is charged in order to reach the caves because private property is used to arrive at Cathedral Caves.
If the weather conditions are not suitable then the gates remain closed for public security.
The very feel of water underneath your feet, and the dark mossy interiors of the cave will attract you towards the Cathedral caves. If you are a first timer in New Zealand, please ensure that you have a proper tide chart along with yourself.
