Aotea Lagoon Wellington

Aotea Lagoon, Wellington is located just north of the Porirua city centre in New Zealand's North Island. Like two other lagoons, this one too was created from Porirua Harbour by the structure of a jetty for the North Island Main Trunk Railway. The lagoons were partly filled in when State Highway 1 was realigned to run alongside the railway. The decision was taken to save Aotea Lagoon as a recreational facility for the surrounding suburbs. New Zealand Ministry of Works which originally wished to fill in the lagoon to create playgrounds developed the site.

A miniature ride-on railway, children's playground and gardens in which weddings are sometimes held are there along the shore of the lagoon which features a tunnel.

Porirua City's main amenity reserves and event venues is Aotea Lagoon. Here you will find a paved walk around the lagoon that takes in the shade house, gardens, duck and wild fowl pond, playground, picnic and barbeque areas and a small fishing jetty.

Fishing and canoeing are possible on the lagoon, however, swimming in the lagoon is not recommended. Here for morning joggers, the distance around the water's edge is 732 meters. Besides, there is an 18 meter Petanque land made of crushed lime on the eastern side of the lagoon, which is large enough to allow up to four games of Petanque to be played simultaneously.

Popular Childrens Playground is positioned at the northern end of the lagoon. Here lots of facilities are at hand. The facilities include equipment suitable for a range of ages.

  -  Track ride/flying fox – 9 m long
  -  Rock-to-pus – variant on the seesaws
  -  Fort – an extensive adventure style wooden structure

  -  Toilets are to be found at both the southern and northern entrances.
