New Zealand's most renowned author and a greatest short-story writer of world, Mansfield was born in this well-designed, inner-city Victorian townhouse in 1888. She passed her first five years in and around the local area that would later provide the inspiration for many of her famous stories. The Birthplace will be familiar to readers of Mansfield's stories introduction, The Aloe and A Birthday. Research has specified that while the Beauchamp family lived this house they owned a doll's house.

At present, Katherine Mansfield Birthplace, Wellington is affectionately and authentically reinstated and furnished in its original period of decoration with antique furniture and replicas of original wallpapers. This wooden house is open for viewing and has permanent and changing exhibitions. The garden is laid out in its original Victorian design.
