Oman Geography

The Sultanate of Oman is located in the southeastern part of the Arabian peninsula. Oman Geography is very diverse and interesting .According to the official estimates, Sultanate of Oman covers a total land area of around 309,500 square kilometers. This makes it the third largest country in the Arabian Peninsula. It is located between Latitudes 16° 40' and 26° 20' North and Longitudes 51° 50' and 59° 40' East.

Oman Geography represents a wide variety in the climate , vegetation and soil in the different parts of the country. The Sultanate of Oman is surrounded by three countries . The United Arab Emirates in the northeast,Saudi Arabia in the west, the Republic of Yemen in the south shares the borders with Oman. The country also has the Strait of Hormuz in the north and the Arabian sea in the east.

The coastline of the country is roughly 1,700 kilometer from the strait of Hormuz in the north and the republic of Yemen in the south direction. The country is surrounded by three seas: the Arabian gulf, the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian sea . These water bodies bring about changes in the Oman Geography.

Historically, the seas were the connecting points for Oman to the rest of the world. . The seas also serves as the linking channels for the various coastal towns of Oman. This is an important and useful feature of the Geography of Oman.

Oman Geography comprises of rich topographical features such as valleys, deserts, mountain ranges and coastal plains. The valleys and desert makes 82% of the land mass of Oman. The coastal plains consists of only 3%. The rest of the land mass has mountain ranges.

The natural features of Oman divide the country into identifiable areas. The northernmost area of the country is the Ruus al Jibal . This area extends from the Musandam Peninsula right up to the boundary of United Arab Emirates. It also borders the strait of Hormuz which links the gulf of Oman with the Persian gulf. This area is characterized by low mountains and a rugged coastline.

Other natural features of the Oman Geography are the Al Batinah coastal plain and the Muscat – Matra coastal area. The Oman interior comprises of Al Jabal al Akhdar and its foothills. There is a barren coastline south of Dhofar region and the offshore island of Masirah.
