Sur in Oman started trading along the African coast almost from the sixth century. The place is still very famous for its traditional shipbuilding process. Sur in Oman was under the Portuguese rule during the 16 th century and it was rescued by Nasir ibn Murshid, after which it went through an economic revival. After the British rule, the city of Sur at Oman was destroyed by the rise of Wahhabism and also by the opening of the Suez Canal. For all these happenings Sur lost its long trade relation with India.
At present, Sur in Oman is still very reputed because it is the major dhow building town in Oman, which make the same wooden vessels that were in use two centuries before. It is one of the most famous cities in Gulf and a very Popular Destination in Oman for the tourists. Due to the historical location of Sur it is able to monitor the Indian Ocean and the Oman Sea. Many of the ships which were constructed in Sur of Oman went to India, China, Iraq and various other countries.
