Lai Chun Yuen Opera House Singapore

Located in the city of Singapore Lai Chun Yuen Opera House occupies a three-storey shopping arcade and was the biggest site for Cantonese opera performances. The opera house was very popular with the residents of the neighborhood and was used as a vital point for directions. During the 1910s and the 1920s, Singapore Lai Chun Yuen Opera House had been the host of famous Cantonese stars like Leng Yuen Hung and Hung Sin Nui.

An important part of the building of Lai Chun Yuen Opera House in Singapore was demolished during a Japanese air attack in the year 1940, as the number of frequenters went down. After the war, the building was reconstructed but it never regained its past glamour. The opera house functioned in several ways right from being a retail store to a warehouse for street hawkers. In the present times, the Lai Chun Yuen Opera House has been given back its original grandeur and is a home to a local Buddhist charity group.

At the Lai Chun Yuen Opera House , stage performances are held very rarely. However on every Tuesday and Friday, an extract of a Cantonese opera classic is performed. The show is accompanied by a small speech and tea and snacks. These performances in opera house are carried out as a workshop and it is advisable to book a seat in advance, each session of which costs $15.
