Description:
According to a legend of ancient China, a man-eating beast living in the mountains, called 'Nian' could penetrate into houses noiselessly to prey on human beings. Later on, after much observation, the people learnt that Nian, the beast was sensitive to the color red and loud noises. So, they devised a new plan and were successful in scaring away the beast with fireworks, explosions and a generous use of the color red. These are the customs which led to the first New Year Celebration of the Chinese in Singapore.
