Petain Road in Singapore
The significance of the Petain Road in Singapore can very well be gauged from the fact that it is one of those areas that have been provided protection from unauthorized destruction or changes by law. It is a part of the Conservation areas of Singapore. It is also locally known as Tyrwhitt Road or Jalan Besar and is a very popular tourist destination in Singapore. Jalan Besar is located in the northeastern part of the Central Business District in Singapore. The Municipality constructed it long ago in the year 1880. The word Jalan Besar is a Malay word meaning big or wide road. However the Singapore Petain Road was built at a much later date in the year 1916.
Petain Road and some of the other roads in this Jelan Besar area are named after British and French generals and admirals who fought in the First World War. Petain is the name of a French general and the road has been named after him because the Municipal Council wanted the people to keep in mind the clashes that were going on in Europe at that point of time.
If you visit the Petain Road in Singapore you are sure to be impressed by the examples of the Singaporean Chinese Architecture that are featured in this road. So do come to the Petain Road in Singapore when you are on a trip to Singapore.
