In the year 1981 the first ever Busan Biennale, Busan was started. For the flawless organization of Busan Biennale, Busan, it is hosted by an independent non-governmental organization. It incorporates in itself events like Busan Young Biennale, Sea Art Festival and International Outdoor Sculpture Symposium. Promotion of Korean art and culture through the hosting of Busan Biennale, Busan is the sole purpose of the committee. It also tries to implement programs for the exchange of art and culture on an international basis. An endeavor is made by the committee to develop the international status of local art and even to improve the base of contemporary art. It is done through the process of specialization of local art and by encouraging the creative activities.

The Contemporary Art Exhibition showcases the chief trends of world’s art which was inaugurated in 1981.You will find different forms of experimental art pieces, both from home and abroad, such as painting, video installation, installation, architecture, photograph, performance and movies.

The Sea Art Festival was started in 1987 as part of the pre-Olympic cultural events. The exclusive and special festival characterizes the art of Busan. The Sea Art Festival can rightly be called as public art because it speaks of oceanity, openness, dynamics and originality.

The Busan Sculpture Project embarked on 1991 and is a special project intending to make Busan a dream city as well as a city of sculpture. It attempted to make the Olympic Park, situated in front lawn of Busan Museum of Modern Art, into an outdoor sculpture park. During the 2002 project the Busan Sculpture Project formed the Asiad Sculpture Park and the Seo-gu Amnam Park. Whereas in 2004, the event made an environmental-friendly sculpture park, out of Eulsukdo, which has been the largest sanctuary for migratory birds in the East. Thus the project has provided the chance to the citizens of Busan to enjoy the culture.
