During the Festival of Joseon Tongsinsa (envoys)'s Korea-Japanese Cultural, Busan, a procession of Joseon Tongsinsa takes place. ‘Tongsin’ means “the exchange of one’s faith”. Joseon Tongsinsa is an official royal envoy from the Joseon Dynasty to the Japanese Shogunate. Joseon’s diplomatic mission assigned to Japan from 1607 to 1811. The Joseon King’s documentation carried out the mission which came up to 300-500 delegates including three envoys- chief envoy, vice envoy and the civil official. An enormous amount was spent by Japan’s shogun for the reception.

In the 21st century the Festival of Joseon Tongsinsa (envoys)'s Korea-Japanese Cultural, Busan has been reenacted. ‘The Reenacted Procession of Joseon Tongsinsa and ‘The Korea-Japanese Cultural Interchange Events’ are held in Yongdusan Park on Gwangbok-no(street), and the city-center area. Every year the festival is held on the month of September. It is organized by the Joseon Tongsinsa Culture Promoting Committee.

The ceremony of the Festival of Joseon Tongsinsa (envoys)'s Korea-Japanese Cultural will be based on the information taken up from existing documents. Prior to their leaving to the island country, a ritual known as “Hae sin jae” used to be performed in order to pray the sea god for the safe voyage and success of the diplomatic mission.

The reenacted ritual is based on two books derived from the collection of a Korean sea traveler’s journals which was made in the 12th century. In Korean the collection is known as “Hae haeng chong jae.” It’s been since the year of 2003 that the event of Joseon Tongsinsa has been reenacted. Presently the reenactment is done in the Confucian style which is quite different from the original ritual.
