History of Dongnae Hyanggyo, Busan

Located at Myeongryun-dong area Dongnae Hyanggyo, Busan is one of the most important cultural relics of South Korea. Bearing a distinctive mark of Korean architecture the “Hyanggyo” or educational premise is an emblem of Confuciasm and its effect on Korean cultural. Originally the word “hyanggyo” means an educational institution conceptually close to what is known as high schools in modern age. Following the Confucian ideals and philosophy, Joseon rulers gave prime importance to education and knowledge as the effective means of creating excellent citizens. They built “hyanggyo” all around Korea to cultivate individual’s virtues and intellect.
It is assumed that the historic Dongnae Hyanggyo, Busan was built around the last decade of fourteenth century since the exact date can not be traced back. This medieval edifice faced several challenges down the ages and stood the test of time. According to historical account the first shrine school was burnt down by Japanese invaders. Then it was restored by Hong Jun, the contemporary Dongnae Magistrate.

There are usually 3 divisions designed for different purposes in a Hyanggyo. The Daeseongjeon portion or a shrine is dedicated to Confucian saints and sages
The Myeongr yundang is intended for lectures and Dongjae and Seojae are dormitories for students.Other auxiliary structures such as warehouses were also included to the main construction.

After the introduction of new education system during the reforming period of 19th century curbed the former glory of Dongnae Hyanggyo, Busan. This place still holds its importance for its noble function of spreading social enlightenment, knowledge and the philosophy of Confucius.
