The Jangansa Temple is located within the elegant Bulgwangsan City Natural Park in Gijang, north of Busan. Surrounding the park is the Bulgwang Mountain, on which stands this 1,000 year old Buddhist temple, the Jangansa temple. The origin of the Jangansa
Temple can be traced back to as early as to the period of King Munmu of the Silla dynasty (673 AD). It is in this 7th century AD that the Jangansa temple was founded by the legendary Silla monk Wonhyo who is considered to be the greatest monk in Korean history.

The temple was originnaly called Ssanggyesa but after King Chungjang of Goryeo Kingdom visited this temple, it was renamed into Jangansa temple. Following the burning of the Jangansa Temple in 1592 by the Japanese, the temple was rebuilt again and again once in 1638 by the great priest Tae-ur Daeungjeon and finally in 1654 by three other priests. And in 1975 the building of the temple was recolored.

The main highlight of the solid and high structured building of the Jangansa Temple is the magnificent shrine on top of the building. Each and every side of the building represents a multi-cluster bracket structure with beautiful tiled roof. Apart from the attractive building, the spectacular sight of the spring originating from the Cheokbanam Hermitage, located on the right side of the temple is also beyond description. Last but not the list from the Jangansa Temple one can also enjoy the fantastic view of the Bulgwangsan Mountain valley, just steps away from the seashore.

On the whole the Jangansa Temple is a temple worth visiting both because of its historical importance as well as for its fascinating beauty.
