Daejeon was the ancient capital of the Baekje Kingdom (18 B.C. - A.D. 660). It possesses a wide array of cultural and historic sites reflecting the ancient culture of the Baekje people. The Daejeon area was historically known as Hanbat, a native Korean term for "large field."

The term "Daejeon" simply means the same thing in Hanja. According to the Daejeon Overview, the city acquired the status of a township 70 years ago and became an official incorporated "city".
