Daejeon World Cup Stadium
Daejeon World Cup Stadium, is the first of its kind in the whole of Korea which has a partly retractile roof and houses only a humongous football field. This wonderful stadium was inaugurated on 13 th of September , 2001.
The location of the stadium is a very well connected spot. Daejeon is always the chief transporation hub of central Korea, being at the confluence of Kyungbu and Honam railways and expressways. The stadium itself is located at Noundong Yuseong, about five kilometers northwest of downtown Daejeon. The city is perhaps regarded to be the best place to have such a big sports complex, because this is the city which nestles most of the government offices of Daejeon.
The design of this stadium is based on the architecture of a traditional Korean House with an inner courtyard and thatched roof. Architects HB Choi/Ubo Engineering Co had tried to follow the orders as per directed by the authorities and are quite successful in creating one of the finest and magnificent structure of Korea.
From outside the stadium looks exactly like a space ship. Though the stadium has touches of Korean ethnicity but it has been very well merged with the city's high tech image. The best part of the design is that the roof is being able to shelter most of the spectators when it rains. The sound absorption layer underneath the roof provides excellent sound quality. The facilities provided in the stadium are :
- sports shop
- shopping mall
- youth hostel
- swimming pool
- indoor golf clubs
- fitness centre
- the performance hall
The pitch of the field is embedded with a customized turf variety known as the Zenith. The stadium is a wonder in itself with one storey underground and the other five above. The stands of the gallery are two tiered and provides an excellent view of the ground.
