Daejeon is located at the center of South Korea, very near to some of the most prominent towns; Seoul is only 167.3 km, 294 km from Busan, and 169 km from Gwangju. It is the entrance to the Honam and the Yeongnam province, with the express ways going to east and the west. The population is only 1,390,510 with an area of 539.83 square kilometers. The city is enclosed with four mountains: Gyeoryongsan, Gyejoksan, Sikjangsan, and Maninsan. The city is also located along three major rivers, the Gapcheon, Yudeungcheon, and Daejeoncheon, all of which form a basin for the city. Each of the rivers runs from south to north, flowing into the Geumgang - one of the biggest rivers in South Korea. The city originally developed from the farms and houses that were scattered along the hillsides and the valleys between the four mountains and along the three rivers. The three rivers come to divide the city's five towns: Dong-gu and Daedeok-gu are located east of the Daejeoncheon; Jung-gu is between the Daejeoncheon and the Yudeungcheon; Seo-gu is between the Yudeungcheon and the Gapcheon; and Yuseong-gu is west of the Gapcheon.
The city has four distinct seasons: spring, summer, fall, and winter. As Daejeon is lies in the mid-latitude temperature zone, it experiences seasonal winds and a continental climate.
