Gangwanseong Fortress Icheon
Gongwasanseong Fortress, Icheon was originally built during the reign of Goreo King Go-jong in the 19th year (1232). After he moved to Gangwha-do he built this fortress as a protection against the ravaging Mongolians. The inner walls of the Gongwasanseong Fortress were destructed when the capital was shifted to a new place. During the Joseon era (1392-1910) it was rebuilt with stones.The original Gongwasanseong Fortress had both the interior and the exterior walls. The exterior wall has been ravaged with time and only the interior wall exists today. The exterior wall, made of mud, was 9 km in circumference with 8 gates. It is built along the eastern side of the channels of Ganghwa. The eastern side of the wall remains to be constructed although the interior has been built and rebuilt many a times till 1977. It has four main gates which open to four different directions. To the south is Apparu, to the north is Jinsongru, West is Manghanru and to the east is Cheomhwaru. The eastern gate does not exist today. The historic Yeonmudang, where the soldiers used to train, exists even today. This is also famous for the historic peace treaty between Korea and Japan was signed in 1876. The original fortress which was 18 km long has been reduced to 1,947m today. The stretch of the Gangwasanseong Fortress is an ideal place for the tourists to explore its scenic beauty.
To reach the Gongwasanseong Fortress from Seoul, take aan intercity bus which is available at a regular interval of 10 minutes from 5.40 in the morning till 9.30 at night. Its a 90 min drive from the city and after reaching the Ganghwa Terminal, its a 10 minutes stroll to the Gongwasanseong Fortress.
Tourist from here can go about a sight seeing to Goryo palace Site, Baekryeonsa Temple, Gangwhadongjong Copper Bell, Bugeun-ri Dolmen.
