Sarabong Peak in Jeju
Jeju-do or Jeju is the only special self-governing province of South Korea and is the country’s largest island. The “do” in Jeju-do translates to Jeju Province in Korean. Jeju-do lies amidst the Korea Strait towards the south western side of Jeollanam-do Province. Jeju was part of the Jeollanam-do Province until it became a separate province in 1946. Its capital is Jeju City. Jeju Island is a volcanic island and its prime feature is the Halla-san: a volcano with an altitude of 1,950 which is also the highest mountain in South Korea. This island was formed completely out of volcanic eruptions approximately 2 million years ago, during the time period from the Tertiary to the beginning of the Quaternary period, and is comprised mainly of basalt and lava. It has a subtropical climate, warmer than the rest of Korea, with four distinct seasons. Half of the summer is rainy, and the winter is fairly dry. Its comparatively warmer climate, sandy beaches and the picturesque Halla-san are why it is virtually known as the honeymoon capital of South Korea. The Jeju Island attracts a lot of tourists from all parts of South Korea. The island has recently started getting quite a steady traffic of foreign tourists as well.
Of the many tourist destinations in Jeju one that is especially popular with tourists is the Sarabong Peak. This place is a popular haunt for newlyweds and college students. A lot of tourists climb to Sarabong Peak to watch the sun set. The Top of the hill overlooks the Jeju Port and one can be privy to a breathtaking view of the coast, stretching away past Jeju City. As the sun sets, the lights around are gradually put on Tap-dong and for a brief moment it seems just like magic. The myriad fishing boats often head out to sea around this time, creating a parade of lights. Obviously, Sarabong Peak’s USP is the spectacular view it provides. Do bring your camera along!
