Gongpyeong Art Center, Seoul

The Gongpyeong Art Center is situated within the Gongpyeong Building in Seoul, South Korea. It was established in the year 1992 and encompasses about 17,791 sq. ft of area. This Gongpyeong Art Center is a two-storied edifice with four exhibition halls. This art center is one of the most important pavilions of Insa-dong that displays various artworks like Western Paintings as well as Korean paintings and an array of sculptures and figurines.

The Korean paintings have held much interest in Korea since elapsed times. The art of Korean paintings is as ancient as the art of the petroglyphs. Korean art consists of conceptual art using ephemeral forms of light. The oil paintings have little use of calligraphy, except for some brushwork entry and Korean calligraphy.

Korea is also renowned for its artistic traditions in pottery that has been characterized by Chinese influences and indigenous traditions. Such pottery is also exhibited in the Gongpyeong Art Center. Natuaral forms, bold colors and surface embellishment are the features of Korean art. You can watch the Koguryo wall paintings and the Buddhist paintings dating back to the Koryo era. Also on display are other types of Korean paintings like the landscape paintings. These include paintings depicting Korean scenes in the eighteenth century and during the first phase of the Choson dynasty. Thus Korean paintings though being influenced by the Chinese art forms have retained its distinct character. Owing to this interest in Korean paintings, about two to three long-term annual exhibitions are held annually in the Gongpyeong Art Center.
