Onggi Folk Museum, Seoul

The Onaggi Folk Museum at Seoul, South Korea holds on display a unique collection of traditional pottery especially the Onggi ware. The Onggi pots and urns have a brownish glaze and are commonly used in South Korean households as containers. Pickles and other edible items are stored in these. The museum is housed in a three storied building built of red bricks. The museum boasts of over 3,000 Onggi items and holds a large outdoor exhibition at most times. The basement showcases utensils, musical instruments and religious relics. The museums also houses about 800 different Dancheong traditional paintings, paper and wood crafts and metal items.

The Onggi Folk Museum also conducts classes in ceramic art every Friday 3:30 a.m. to 4:40pm and every Saturday 11:00am to 12:10pm. The one month long course is likely to cost you 30,000 KRW and admission is available on prior reservation.

The Onggi Folk Museum is afforded easy connectivity by the Seoul Subway Line 4, exit 4 of Suyu Station. From here bus No.101 or 170 will take you to Seorabeol Junior High School. Alternatively you may choose to take Line 6 exit 4 and take shuttle bus no. 2 to the bus. Bus Nos.144, 151, 1118, 1120, 1122, 1144, 1161, 1217, 1218, 1219 also connect Seorabeol Junior High School with the rest of Seoul. A short walk from the school takes one to the museum.

The admission fee at the Onggi Folk Museum is 2,000 KRW for visitors between ages 5 & 18 and 3,000 KRW for those aged 19 or above.

Timings:

The Onggi Folk Museum of Seoul is open through the year. Every Monday the museum closes down for maintenance work and it is also closed on the Lunar New Year Day and Korean Thanksgiving Day. Other days the museum is open November through February from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and March through October from 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
