Eixample Barcelona

Eixample Barcelona

Barcelona boasts of all the requisites of being an avant-garde destination and it receives a heavy influx of tourists all throughout the year. There is no shortage of popular destination in the city and Eixample, Barcelona has emerged to be a significant tourist destination of the city. It is a significant district of the city. It is situated between the old city of Ciutat Vella and adjoining smaller towns. The district is one of the oldest districts of the city and it boasts of a rich cultural and historical legacy. Eixample was constructed in the19th and early 20th centuries and the architecture of the buildings of the district reflect influences of modern architects like Antoni Gaudí. In fact Gaudí designed two buildings of the area, Casa Milà and Casa Batlló, both of which are located on Passeig de Gràcia.

Eixample features long streets, strict grid pattern boasting of wide avenues and truncated-square blocks. This unique and visionary design was conceived by the renowned architect Ildefons Cerdà. His pioneering design rendered the streets of the district with greater visibility, greater ventilation and short-stay parking space. In order to allow the horse drawn carts to move smoothly along the streets, the corners of the streets were cut off. But it is the grid pattern of the Eixample that is a major highlight of the district. Passeig de Gràcia and Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes are the two most vital avenues of the district along with other avenues like Carrer d'Aragó and Passeig de Sant Joan.

Several sections of Eixample are upper class neighborhoods that include the area surrounding the central Passeig de Gràcia. At the same time, Eixample also boasts of many mutilated buildings, which are resided by lonely aged tenants, suffering from penury. Eixample is an integral part of Barcelona and a tour of the city is incomplete without a tour of the district.
