Collserola Tower
The Collserola Tower is one of the most popular sightseeing destinations in the city of Barcelona. The Tower is a telecommunications tower which was built on the Collserola mountain range, on the Vilana hill. The tower was primarily built for the 1992 Olympic Games which were held in the city in 1992.The Collserola Tower, Barcelona was designed by leading English architect Norman Foster in collaboration with the company Ove Arup & Partners. The collaboration was formed after their project had won a restricted competition organised by the Barcelona City Council in 1988.
The structural conception of the tower is bold and required a very singular construction. The construction was based on different ceilings above the ground, raising them up through the central cement shaft, which was previously built to its height of more than 70 metres above the ground. The Collserola Tower in Barcelona stands at a height of 288 metres and makes it the highest construction in the city. The Tower became operational since the spring of 1992.
The Collserola Tower is the telecommunications junction in Catalonia. The entire television broadcasts and 95% of the radio stations that can be heard in Barcelona and its metropolitan area are emitted through this tower. It is also the linking point for the whole Catalan network.
There is an observation point on the tenth floor of the tower which is open top the public. You could get a very different view of the city and its surrounding areas from the observation deck. From the Lookout Point, you could enjoy a view of the city from a height of 560 m, and the Pyrennees can be seen on a clear day.
The Lookout Point can be reached by taking the FGC (the Autonomous Government of Catalonia trains) up to the foot of the Funicular, then the Funicular to the Vallvidrera Superior Station and the 211 bus that runs every half-hour.
