The Reina Sofía National Museum and Art Centre, Madrid, was designed in the 18th century by Fernando Sabatini with the command of Charles III. It was declared as an artistic historical monument in 1977. The fabulous collection have come from the acquisitions of the museum itself, from donations from artists like Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí and also Spanish Museum of Contemporary Art.Today the Reina Sofía National Museum and Art Centre, Madrid is considered to be one of the biggest of all the contemporary art museums in the world. The Sabatini building is the oldest part of the museum and it has four floors. The main exhibits of the first floor are the temporary exhibits and the second and the fourth floors have the permanent collections. The third floor is kept closed for the public. The second floor contains the work of the Modernists of the 20th Century and the main collections are those of Julio Gonzalez, Juan Gris, Joan Miró, José Gutiérrez's Solana, Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí.
The fourth floor has the work of the artists from the 1940s to the present era. This floor contains the major works of artists like Antonio Saura, Antoni Tapies and Eduardo Chillida.

permanent collections area increased by fifty percent. With the expansion the
museum now has a massive library consisting of 3,500 sonorous registries, 240,000
