Candela

Candela

If you are in a mood to listen to some good flamenco late at night while nursing a few glasses of wine then Candela is the place for you. If you are walking down Calle Olivar from the Lavapies metro stop plaza you will come across the salmon pink walls of the Candela at the top of the hill where the Calle Olivar meets Calle del Olmo. The Candela is almost impossible to miss. You’ll hear the staccato beats of flamenco dance and the soulful wail of flamenco music from at least a mile across and you won’t be able to help but be drawn top the place.

The crowd that frequents the place is diverse to say the least. The place is vibrant and virtually pulsating with life. Don’t be phased by the stern looking bouncer at the door and walk just right in. You will be lucky to find an empty table inside the narrow bar (and well…probably too early). After you find yourself a place to sit, you should settle down to watch and you will be witness to some truly mind blowing flamenco.

The Candela is a favorite haunt of famous flamenco performers and you will here all kinds of flamenco music here- from traditional to new age to progressive. Revered figures like dancer Antonio Canales and renowned bands like Ketama have been known to come the Candela to try out new work or to jam with artists.

The Candela has unique a decor very much befitting its atmosphere and the type of entertainment it provides. It is decorated in colorful lively and typically Andalusian style. The ceramic tiles and the photographs of famous performers and paintings by renowned flamenco artists like Bonifacio Alfonso and Pepe Puente and posters of Cumbre Flamenca (Flamenco Summit) signed by all the participants, including Camerón de la Isla adds an interesting kitschy feel to the place. The famous Camerón de la Isla used to be regular to the Candela.
