Buddha Bathing Festival Taiwan

The festival as the name suggest is about the Bathing ceremony of Lord Buddha who is also known as Sakyamuni and the celebration of this goes back to some two thousand and five hundred years.

There is a myth associated with the ceremony which states that the heaven offered flowers along with nine celestial dragons that had sprang fragrant rain from their mouth to cleanse the newly born prince who would go on to become the founder of one of the greatest religion that the world has ever seen. This ceremony is often repeated in various temples across the whole of island to commemorate the birth of Lord Buddha on the 8th of April in the lunar calendar. This phenomenon or activity is often referred to as the bathing festival or the Showering Buddha Festival.

The phenomenon includes bowing in front of the Lord Buddha some three times with folded hands and then pouring fragrant water with herbs over the statue of the baby Buddha. This act is repeated some three times and is supposed to bring about a spiritual growth among all the people who take part in the entire process. The water with which Buddha bathes is considered holy and said to shower blessings on people who drink or breathe it.
