Spring Festival Taiwan
The Spring festival or the Lunar New Year is perhaps the biggest festival that the whole country of Taiwan celebrates and this festival is considered equally important if not more by the ethnic Chinese community all over the world.
The festival is not a one day affair and it goes on for a full month and in various stages starting from the sixteenth day of the 12th month. It is an occasion full of fun and frolic and people usually take a break from their work as offices and other establishments usually remain closed and people have loads of time to be with their near and dear ones.
The festival and its origin dates back to some thousand years and one legend has that the celebrations are there to ward off an extremely cruel and a ferocious beast. To ward off this evil beast torches are lit, red paper couplets are pasted on the doors and fire crackers are set off as the evil beast Nian is afraid of these things. So at the stroke of the midnight the whole island of Taiwan is abuzz with sounds of explosions of fire crackers and sky rockets and to complement the sound every place in the vibrant island is lit up to ward off the evil spirits.
Since it is the most important festival in Taiwan it is worth visiting the island during this festival.
