Royal Ploughing Ceremony
Royal Ploughing Ceremony, Bangkok takes place every year in the month of May which marks the auspicious commencement of the rice-sowing season. It is celebrated at Sanam Luang near the Grand Palace Bangkok
The Royal Ploughing Ceremony in Bangkok was practiced even before the birth of Lord Buddha and it is basically of Brahmin origin. The date and time are set by the royal Brahman Astrologers and the king also takes part in the festivities but doesn't play the leading role in the festivities. The king appoints the Ploughing Lord to carry on all the rituals in his palace.Earlier His Majesty the King, only presided over the rituals.
In the Royal Ploughing Ceremony ,Bangkok a colorful ceremony is organized where the Ploughing Lord is offered three identical pieces of cloth , if he chooses the longest one then it is believed that rain will be there in the coming year if his choice is of the shortest cloth then rain will be maximum and medium cloth signifies there will be average rainfall.
The Ploughing Lord then wears that cloth or Panung and with a scared red and gold plough drawn by sacred bull , ploughs furrows in Sanam Luang.
Along with this the traditionally dressed Brahmin leaders interpret omens to forecast the coming year's rice yield, chant and blow conch shells
The Royal Ploughing Ceremony ,Bangkok since 1966, is also known as Annual Agriculturists Day as declared by the cabinet. Now it is actually an Annual Ploughing Ceremony in Bangkok to create awareness among the agriculturists and to remind them to participate in the festival.
