Getting to Chiang Mai by train can take a lot of your time. Nonetheless, it is a reliable and easily affordable mode of getting into the city.

The railway station at Chiang Mai is comparatively small, but spick and span, and offers a number of facilities to travelers. The station has two advance booking counters along with an ATM center and luggage counter. The booking office can make reservations for train seats anywhere in Thailand.

Situated on Charoen Muang Road across River Ping, this railway station is close to the main post office. The ticket counter is open from 5.30 am to 9 pm and the luggage counter is open from 6 am to 6 pm.

Rapid trains leave Bangkok's Hualamphong Station for Chiang Mai daily at 3 pm. The services at this hour are air conditioned 2 nd and 3 rd class. At 10 pm, is another train that is non-air-conditioned and offers 2 nd class sleeper and 3 rd class seats. These trains reach Chiang Mai at 5.35 am and 1.05 pm respectively. The journey time of getting to Chiang Mai by train is more than 16 hours.

There are express diesel railcars that leave Bangkok at 8.25 am and 7.25 pm, and reach Chiang Mai at 8 pm and 7.40 am respectively. Then, there are other special express trains that leave for Chiang Mai at various times of the day.

The 2 nd class fare of trains to Chiang Mai is usually 281 Bahts. There are special surcharges for different trains – Special Express (80 B0), Express (60 B) and Rapid (40 Bahts). You will have to pay an additional 100 Bahts for an upper berth and 150 Bahts for a lower one. The basic 1 st class fare of trains is 593 Bahts.

If you decide to use rail travel to get into Chiang Mai, be sure to make your berth reservations much in advance. Most of the times there are no seats available, especially during festivals in Chiang Mai .

Most of the express trains to Chiang Mai have facilities like restaurant car, neat toilets and food vendors on board. The staff is helpful, attentive and extremely cooperative towards tourists.
