Wiang Kum Kam, Chiang Mai was founded by king Mengrai. The city is situated between the river Ping and the Lamphun highway, south of Mahidol Road. The city was buried for about two centuries until in 1984 archaeologists found the remains of an ancient city. Extensive research by archeologists proves that was the city of Wiang Kum Kam.

Wiang Kum Kam, Chiang Mai is home to about 20 temple sites. The buildings in the city were buried by flooding waters of river Ping. Flooding waters forced King Mengrai to move his capital to Chiang Mai.

You cannot explore Wiang Kum Kam, Chiang Mai on foot as this site is spread over a large area. You can discover the city on a bicycle or you could hire a tram or pony carriage.

Over 1300 stone slabs, chedis, brickbells and stupas have been excavated from Wiang Kum Kam, Chiang Mai over the past few years. The most important discovery made from the region is four piece inscribe stone slab, which is now on display at Chiang Mai National Museum
