Phuket Population
Phuket is one of the popular tourist destinations in Thailand. The people of Phuket are tolerant and easy-going. Most of the Phuket population comprises Thai people. It also has ethnic groups like Malays, Chinese, and Chao Leh or ' sea-gypsies'. The Chao Leh are the originally resided on Phuket.The population in Phuket consists of 71% Thai-Buddhists, 24 % Malays and 4 % Chao Leh. Thai-Buddhists also include Chinese people. There are 35 % Chinese according to some estimates. Most of the Phuket population lives in or around Patong Beach and Phuket City.
According to a 2007 report of Phuket Provincial Administration office, the population is around 313,955 people. However, this figure doesn' t reflect those who are registered outside but work and live in Phuket. Also this Thai tourist destination has a large number of seasonal workers. So during peak periods, the Phuket population can be as high as 500,000.
The main religion followed in Thailand is Buddhism. 95 percent of Thai people are Buddhist. There are 140,000 Buddhist priests and 18,000 Buddhist temples. Most Buddhist men join a Wat or monastery for a few months or days. Around 4 percent of the population is Malaysian. There are also small communities of Hindus and Christians.
