Wat Pra Tong Phuket

Wat Pra Tong Phuket

Wat Pra Tong in Phuket is the oldest temple on the island and was created when Thalang was still Phuket's capital. The Wat Pra Tong temple in Phuket is located north of Thalang and about 20 km from Phuket , Thailand .

This shrine of Wat Pra Tong in Phuket enfolds a golden statue of Buddha that sprang up from beneath the earth long ago. The story runs that a young boy tied his buffalo to the golden peak of Buddha 's conical cap, which he thought was a post, and fell down in agony and died. His father dreamed that the reason for his death was the sin of tying the filthy buffalo to a sacred object.

After he told his neighbors about the dream, they all went out to dig up the statue, but had no success. Later in 1785 AD, during Thao Thep Kasatri's heroic defense against the Burmese, the invaders tried the same, but failed as well. In fact, the Burmese were unable to capture the golden Buddha despite several attempts.

The villagers then decided to protect their miraculous statue by covering the part that stuck up from the ground with a plaster cast of Buddha's head and shoulders. This led to the formation of the temple that you can go and see today.
