The immigrating Chinese Thais, who arrived in Phuket during the 19th century tin boom, have had a great impact on Phuket's social fabric as well as the overall etiquette and behavior in Phuket. Behavioral Guidelines in Phuket

The basic Phuket etiquette and behavior is the same as in most parts of Thailand, with the local people being extremely well-mannered and polite. Please bear to keep the following guidelines in mind while embarking on a tour to Phuket. Remember to remove your shoes while entering Thai houses or some offices. In some cases there are certain shops where it is required to keep your shoes outside the premises. It is preferable that you follow such instructions if they are provided. The head is the supreme part of a human body and hence should not be touched if the recipient of the touch is not a good friend or kid. If you happen to touch anyone's head your apology should be heart felt. If you are to greet a person of equal or superior social rank, place palms together in the region of the chests in a prayer-like manner. This is "wai" or the traditional way of greeting. If you are greeted with a wai you should return the favor. However, you should remember not to wai people of a lower social rank or children. It is an important part of etiquette and behavior in Phuket.

As per etiquette and behavior in Phuket it is important that you address Thai people by preceding their first names with "khun". For instance, if you are addressing someone called Chutima Kittiporn you should address her as "khun Chutima". The polite Thai way of speaking is to end Thai phrases with "khrap" for males and with "khaa" for females.

Remember not to ever speak impolitely about the royal family or about anything connected to the King. The feet are considered the least respectful part of the body. You should avoid pointing your feet at others and stepping on others when they are lying or seating. Wear decent attire when visiting a temple or "wat". It is better to avoid sleeveless shirts and shorts. You may also take photographs of various ceremonies and the monks but if you are nursing doubts then it is advisable to seek permission from the monks. These are absolutely the most important aspects of etiquette and behavior in Phuket.

It is advisable according to the etiquette and behavior in Phuket that you do not show outward signs of anger as it is regarded as being greatly shameful in Thailand. It reflects poor upbringing and total absence of values. Showing affection to your partner in public is considered indecent as well. Ladies should remember to refrain from touching a Buddhist monk. Decent clothing is advisable.

Etiquette and behavior in Phuket dictates that you should not touch Thai ladies without their permission as they are normally conservative. Always smile in Phuket or anywhere else in Thailand. When you receive any good service you can provide small tips as a mark of gratitude and it is well appreciated as well. Try to be friendly when you are bargaining with the local shops. Do not be disrespectful with the police or legal authorities.
