Chiang Mai is the fifth-largest city in Thailand. Bounded by mountains and lush countryside, Chiang Mai has a population of 1,670,000. This city is the gateway to Northern Thailand. Set on the Ping River which is parted of Chao Phraya River, Chiang Mai was founded by King Mengrai. It is about 700 kilometers from north of Bangkok.

Getting to Chiang Mai

You can reach Chiang Mai by rail, road or air. Travelling by air is the fastest way to reach Chiang Mai. Chiang Mai International Airport is the main airport of the city. It is served by major airline companies like Air Asia, Bangkok Airways, Silk Air and Thai Airways.

There are many trains running from Bangkok's Hualamphong station to Chiang Mai. It is 12 hours train journey to Chiang Mai from Bangkok. Number of buses ply between Bangkok and Chiang Mai. One can catch a bus to Chiang Mai from Bangkok's northern Bus Terminal. One will require approximately 9 hours by road to reach Chiang Mai from Bangkok. You can commute throughout the city by tuk-tuk or samlor, taxi, bus, motorcycle and songthaew.

Shopping in Chiang Mai
Besides the two large shopping malls, Airport Plaza and Central Kad Suan Keaw, Chiang Mai has famous Chiang Mai Night Bazaar, Sunday Market, Saturday Market and Warorot Market. You can purchase watches, handbags, and designer label clothing, herbs and spices and handicraft items in Chiang Mai.
