About Khon Kaen, Thailand:

Khon Kaen, with the province and the main city bearing the same name, is the political and commercial center of north-eastern Thailand. The city is home to the largest university in the region. The province is also the center of the silk industry in the northeast.

Getting to Khon Kaen:

Khon Kaen City is located 449 kilometers from Bangkok. It is accessible by AC coaches, non-AC buses or train. If you are flying, you can take a Thai Air flight from Bangkok. Thai Air operates 4 to 5 flights to Khon Kaen daily. There are bus services available from Northern (Moh Chit) Bus Terminal in Bangkok to Khon Kaen. By car, one can reach here through Highway 2.

To get around:

There are tuk-tuks (three wheeled buggy), pickup trucks called Song Taew (Baht buses) and AC public buses to help you get around in Khon Kaen.

Popular Attractions in Khon Kaen:

Lying in the middle of the vast Isan Plateau, Khon Kaen has many attractions, such as:
  • Pha Nok Khao, a rock formation from which large parts of the neighboring Loei province can be seen, like Nam Pong River and the scenic Phu Kradung National Park.
  • Bung Kaen Nakorn by the lakeside, a popular recreational area in southern Khon Kaen City
  • Phu Kao-Phu Phan Kham National Park, where tourists can enjoying trekking in the deciduous and evergreen forests
  • Ubolrat Dam, the largest multi-purpose dam in Isan which also has a reservoir-side restaurant and ample opportunities for boating.
  • Khon Kaen National Museum, containing artifacts from Ban Chiang which is thought to be the site of the world's first Bronze Age civilization
  • See the entire process of silk production at the Local Handicraft Center in Chonnabot Village, a center for fine mudmee silk. The center is open 9 am -6pm daily.

Silk Festival:

Being north-east Thailand's major silk production center, this festival is the annual celebration of Thai silk. The entire process of silk production, including sericulture and silk weaving is promoted during this festival and the celebrations are staged in front of government houses in Khon Kaen City.

Dok Khoon Siang Khaen Flower Festival:

Coinciding with Songkran, or the Traditional Thai New Year, this is a colorful festival featuring floral processions, foot-tapping I-san folk music, dance and lots of fun!
