Mae Hong Son is a province located in the North West of Thailand and its capital city bears the same name. The place is surrounded by hills and dense forests and for a long time the place was considered to be a land of exile due to its inaccessible nature. Most of the people living here are the Shans whose ancestors were originally Burmese and also certain hill tribes like the Karen, Lisu and Lua. The place is often nicknamed as the "city of three mists" as it is covered with mists all year long.

Places of interest in Mae Hong Son, Thailand:

Phrathat Doi Gongmoo Temple is situated on the West side of the town, high up on the mountains. The two chedis in this temple are of great architectural beauty.

Phra Non temple is devoted to Buddha and located at the foot of the Gongmoo Mountain. The main hall of this temple is decorated beautifully with galvanized iron and it also features a museum.

Hua Wieng Temple is influenced by Burmese architecture and the Buddha statue that it houses was bought from Burma.

Jong Kham Lake has now been transmuted into a park and is a place of great tourist attraction owing to the pleasant scenery.

Jong Kham and Jong Klang temples are situated on the Jong Kham Lake and are the oldest temples in Mae Hong Son. The Burmese style wooden dolls, the glass paintings and the Mon style chedis are of great architectural value.

Fish Cave has a pool in front of it formed by the natural springs from beneath the mountain and this pool houses many large fishes. Many trees surround the cave and there is a small river flowing beside the cave, which has such limpid water that allows you to see its sandy bottom. The Fish cave is located in the village of Huay Pha which is 17 kms away from Mae Hong Son.

Phu Sua Waterfall is known for its interesting rock formations.

Events and festivals are celebrated in Mae Hong Son throughout the year. There are different rituals, dances and even food for each ceremony. The most important festival among these is the festival of Poi Sang Long, which is the ordination of the young Shan boys as monks.


There are several hotels within the city as well as plenty of guesthouses located around the Jong Kham Lake. The place can be reached from Chiang Mai by car or bus by the Mae Hong Son loop.
