Nong Khai Thailand
Nong Khai is a city in the Isan region of north eastern Thailand. The city is situated on the Mekong River’s western bank. The place is most famous for its Thai Lao friendship bridge. The capital of Laos, Vientiane is 20 kilometers from here. Nong Khai, Thailand has many other places of interest including museums and parks.
Attractions in Nong Khai, Thailand:
- Thai Lao Friendship Bridge: this bridge was built together by the governments of Thailand, Laos and Australia in 1994. The bridge crosses over the river Mekong and connects the Thai city of Nong Khai with the city of Vientiane in Laos.
- Wat Phu Tok: This is a spiritual destination and features a vast collection of wooden ramps and ladders that reaches a rocky outcrop in seven stages, symbolizing the seven steps towards enlightenment.
- Sala Kaew Ku: This park features sculptures done by Luang Pa Bunleua Sulilat. The sculptures are inspired by Buddhist, Hindu and Confucian ideas. The entry charge is 10 baht for Thai nationals and 20 baht for foreigners. The wheel of life is the most interesting with statues depicting the seven stages of human life. The remains of Luang Pa’s mummy are enshrined in the third floor of the pavillion.
- The Mekong River: The picturesque Mekong River is another attraction of the city.
- The Phu Pra Bat: this is a historical park located in Udorn province but is easily accessible from Nong Khai. There are monastic and prehistoric sites here.
- Prap Ho Monument Festival: this event celebrates the bravery of the Thai people who resisted the Ho Chinese armies. The festival takes place in the month of March
- Visit Nong Khai at the end of October to witness the magical Naga fireballs emerging from the river. This festival is one of the most popular ones in Nong Khai.
- The Loy Krathong Festival takes place on the full moon night in November. People go to the river and float Krathongs or small boats made of banana leaves in order to thank the river.
