Chinese New Year in Thailand
Thai people with Chinese origin celebrate Chinese New Year in Thailand with great enthusiasm. Local Chinese community organizes colorful processions and dragon dances as a part of New Year celebrations. The Chinese New Year is usually celebrated on first day of Chinese style lunar calendar. Chinese people use red banners on the main gate of the shop and houses. According to them, red color will bring them good luck in the coming year. People present money inside red envelops. The living rooms are adorned with vases of flowers, dried sweet fruit and tangerines. People gift oranges and tangerines to each other during Chinese New Year.
Chinese New Year celebrations in Thailand:
Chinese New Year in Thailand is mainly celebrated at Chinatown in Bangkok and in town center of Nakorn Sawan Province. Lion dances and dragon dances are the most significant things to watch during the Chinese New Year in Thailand. These dances are performed in order to ward off evil spirits. Thousands of visitors throng in Nakhon Sawan to participate in Chinese New Year celebrations.
During Chinese New Year, food stalls are lined up on both the sides of the road. Acrobatic performances are also organized during colorful processions. Chinese New Year is also organized in some other cities of China like Chiang Mai, Phuket, Chon Buri and Songkhla.
You can see banquets displayed on the streets that are meant to satisfy the Chinese ancestral spirits. There is roasted duck, fruits, edible Chinese flowers, Chinese cakes and various other food items included in the display. Clothes and gold are also offered to the ancestors. As a part of New Year celebrations Chinese street operas are also performed on the roadsides and reunion dinner with families are organized. Lastly, fireworks mark the end of the New Year celebration.
