Ho Chi Minhs Birthday Ho Chi Minh City
Festivals and celebrations are considered to be a major part of the lives of the Vietnamese people. As a sizeable population of Vietnam is rural the festivals are more agriculture based, which each new generation tries to adhere to and improve upon year after year. Thus festivals like Fisherman Festival, Wandering Souls Day and Thien Hau Pagoda festival are celebrated with a lot of pomp and ceremony throughout the country.Conversely however Ho Chi Minh City has a lot of national heroes and leaders and honoring them by commemorating their birth or death anniversary is pretty common in urban areas (although these holidays are national holidays and are applicable throughout the country). One such example would be Ho Chi Minh’s birthday festival that is celebrated on the 19th of May.
Ho Chi Minh (May 19, 1890 – September 2, 1969) was a Vietnamese revolutionary and statesman, who later became Prime Minister (1946–1955) and President (1955–1969) of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. The name Ho Chi Minh means "he who enlightens." He is credited as being the founder of the Viet Minh independence movement in 1941 and establishing communist control in part of Vietnam in the 1950s.
The former president who was instrumental in winning freedom for the people of Vietnam is a popular and revered national figure. The city of Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City in his honor. Ho Chi Minh’s Birthday is thus a very important National holiday for all of Vietnam and especially so for Ho Chi Minh City.
