Cat Tien National Park Ho Chi Minh City

Cat Tien National Park, established in 1978, is the largest and most famous of all the National Parks in Vietnam. It covers a huge area of more than 70,000 hectares (173,000 acres) spreading over three provinces in Vietnam namely Lam Dong, Binh Phuoc and Dong Nai. Its wide variety of flora and fauna can be best explored by walking through the trails of the park.

The Cat Tien National Park features over 1,300 species of vascular plants, 34 of which have been included in the Red Data Book of Vietnam. It also houses several valuable timber species like Dialium cochinchinensis, Afzelia xylocarpa, Dalbergia oliveri and Pterocarpus macrocarpus. Till date 76 species of mammal, 320 types of bird, 74 species of reptile, 35 species of amphibian, 99 species of fish and 435 butterfly species are recorded to inhabit this famous National Park in Ho Chi Minh City. 16 globally endangered species of mammals and 15 birds and 8 reptiles are also preserved in this park. This National Park with high density of animal population plays a major role in primate conservation.

Among the primates, that are being supported by the Can Tien National Park, Northern Pig-tailed Macaque Macaca leonine, Yellow-cheeked Crested Gibbon Hylobates gabriellae and Black-shanked Douc Pygathrix nigripes are worth mentioning. Its role in the conservation of large mammals has also been remarkable. Some of the large mammals that inhabit the National Park at high densities are Asian Elephant Elephas maximus, Eurasian Wild Pig Sus scrofa, Lesser One-horned Rhinoceros, Sambar Cervus unicolor and Gaur Bos gaurus.
