Disturbing Relic from the 1960s Hue

Hue is not only a Vietnamese city displaying its rich past that consists of the achievements by the emperors of past dynasties, but also a modern place which has got out of the monarchy lifestyle and culture and stored in its history the tussle between two religions in the 1960s. Disturbing Relic from the 60s, Hue is one of those remnants of Hue's recent past.

During your visit to Hue, if you come to Thien Mu Pagoda, you will find a worn out green sedan sitting in a garage. It may appear odd to those travelers who actually do not know the shocking history behind this.

In the 1960s, Vietnam experienced a huge social topsy-turvy. As a consequence, there began a tussle between the state and a religion. Vietnamese Buddhists challenged at that time that they were victimized by the regime of the then-president Ngo Dinh Diem. Ngo Dinh Diem was a Catholic.

On June 13, 1963, the monk Thich Quang Duc, in protest, took this battered car to a busy junction in Saigon. There, he set himself afire while remaining seated in a lotus pose. The event reasonably caused a chaos in Vietnam. It is this historic relic which is seen at the Thien Mu Pagoda.
