We had a room with a balcony...
We had a room with a balcony and a wonderful view, on the ground floor as we had requested no stairs. The accommodation is basic (especially the bathroom) but stunning value for money, and we had the most beautiful mosquito nets I have ever seen. The beds were large and comfortable and there were two chairs, a small table and a large wardrobe. (The only mosquito we encountered was in the bathroom on the last night.) The hotel provided excellent assistance in getting us from the station in Lao Cai to Sa Pa and back and also arranges local tours and treks. The staff are very willing but really only the owner can communicate in English. It was very quiet at night, better probably than staying in the centre of the town. It was only 3-5 minutes' walk to the centre.
But Asia Rooms made a mistake in saying that breakfast is included in the price - it isn't. However the owner gave us a discount on what we had had for breakfast,which was in any case extremely cheap and good value.
Sapa Starlight is highly recommended.
