This is a lovely hotel !
Quite place with magnificent garden and bungalows.
The beach is nice (with black send) but small.
Personel is kind and at your disposal at all time.
The food is extremly good and inventive, but pricy for Bali.
The diving center in the hotel itself (Werner Lau) is good for divers that whish to go to Menjangan island or Secret Bay.
Best place for Honeymoners or serious divers.

We were extremely pleased with this hotel, even more so than with the Ritz-Carlton in Jimbaran. The location is not easy to get to, so I would advise people not interested in a wild car ride up and down steep mountain sides with lots of lawless traffic to stick to the south side of Bali (or at least use a Matahari driver, as they are much more familiar with the route, and exceptionally friendly, kind people). For us, it was worth it, and since we're used to insane mountain driving, it wasn't all bad.
The rooms are beautiful and more than comfortable. We loved the outdoor patios, and there was security present at all times. There is no TV but if you're at Matahari, you're probably not a big couch potato, anyway. You will be tempted to lounge all day, the rooms are that comfortable. The bathrooms were wonderful, with outdoor showers and all kinds of goodies for the tub, salts, spices, etc. Fresh fruit every day, and room service is worthwhile. The restaurants are also good, and the main restaurant tends to have some form of entertainment every evening. Breakfast is accompanied by live music as well. The cocktails are frankly not that great, but the bartender at the bar is a lot of fun.
The beach is really, really fabulous, with dark sands, strong but definitely swimmable warm water, and a restaurant and towel service. At night, it's breathtaking-- absolutely black velvet sky with more stars than I have ever seen at once, black water with white waves breaking, and black sands. The hotel also has a very nicely done pool with a bar. The grounds of the hotel are quite genius- the actual space is much smaller than it appears, but the landscaping and building planning was done in such a way that everywhere you look is beauty, and privacy.
The spa is very good (and really pretty) but not world level, so definitely use the spa but expect a few glitches. The price value is excellent and the staff throw their heart into everything they do. Surrender and let them do what they want. The free yoga classes were sometimes amazing, sometimes just nice, depending on who led the class.
Only room complaints were the awkward step into bed, somewhat annoying light system, and windows which don't open for a breeze at night without a lot of squeaking on windy nights. Food here is very good but not amazing (though take that with a grain of salt, because we are very picky foodies), but you won't be unhappy. Service is slower here in the north of Bali, but worth the wait because of the friendliness, extra care and thoughtfulness, and personality. Do take time to meet the people of the area.
The hotel shares a beach with the Werner Lau dive center, which has a very kind and competent staff. They will take very good care of you. Likewise, the Permuteran stables just a few meters down the road is absolutely recommended; their horses are in great shape and the owner is a very nice guy.

Hi! We had a great time at the hotel. The location of the hotel is a remote (there's absolutely nothing around the hotel but a long road with a few "warungs" and other resorts). So you feel like you must stay at the hotel. Too bad the sea is a bit desapointing (no snorkeling), but you can go to the national park and enjoy a very nice snorkeling there. I can't wait to be back someday at Pemuteran....

We stayed 4 nights beginning of august, this was
the last hotel on our tour of Bali. By then we had some experience to compare this hotel with other facilities on the island.
We payed about 170 for a room, thats slightly less then what we paid for other hotels on the island.
The hotel has been in use for 11 years, this shows. The rooms are decorated and furnished in local style hardwood, which is o.k. but the rooms are small and have no TV ( this is not in their philosophy so the french manager told me, guess i didnt take that course).
There is no internet connection in the room, you can use a terminal(just one) in the TV room. ( that is if one of the other guests isnt using it) and you pay a few dollars for 15 minutes online access.
Rooms service was most expensive i have seen on the island, desert is conveniently served with the main dish. ( they took it back ) Same for trips organised by the hotel, expensive.
Service is quite allright, allthough at this side of the island all is more laid back. The other hotels I visited would at least have twice at much staff for the same amount of guests.
The pool is old. The outdoor airco unit is noisy.
The dive club is a no go in my opinion, we paid 50 euros for 45 minutes snorkeling on the local reef ( wich turned out to be 500 meters from the beach).
The operators are complete peasants, they made no effort to make it easy to get on the boat, we had to practically swim to it. After some free dives my nose was bleeding, nobody even bothered to ask how i was doing. Turned out there were yelly fish in the water that stung, they might have recommended a wetsuit. It took hours for my girlfriends skin to normalize. And only after i paid them i realized the buggers had short changed me.
Many other guests looked like they were not paying what i paid through asia rooms. If you can stay here for $60-80 i guess you have a good deal.
The restaurant is a relais and chateau, food is great. But expect to pay 130 euro for three course dinner for two including a bottle of wine. These prices dont go well with the accomodation.
Stay somewhere else, and go for dinner sometime at the MataHari that is my recommendation.

Extremely beautiful and luxurious hotel perfect for a romantic and relaxing stay. The premises are surrounded by beautiful mostly untouched landscape which is very rewarding after the fascinating but very long drive from Denpassar.
The rooms and premises are in excellent shape, the beautiful sandy beach is just around the corner of your bungalow entrance.
The staff has always been very friendly and very interested in making the stay a memorable experience.

Having recently stayed at Matahari Beach Hotel in the North of Bali, I can recommend it whole-heartedly. I have been lucky enough to stay in many 5-star hotels but this one is absolutely outstanding. The buildings, decor, furnishings and wonderful statues and fountains, as well as the beautiful gardens and swimming pool help to give an atmosphere so wonderful that you feel transported to another world. Every attention to detail has been given and no expense spared, it seems. The rooms are all secluded in their own space amongst the gardens and are beautifully equipped and furnished. The stone and wood carvings are all works of art collected or commissioned by the owner. I only wish that we had been able to stay for longer. I would give 6 stars, if possible.
