This was an absolute oasis. The room was enchantingly colonial in style, but with all mod-cons (including Wifi)subtly incorporated. We couldn't believe how quiet it was considering our location in central Surabaya. The bed was deep and soft and we slept undisturbed, awaking only briefly to the sound of bird song at dawn. Everywhere we went there were beautifully manicured gardens and fountains, with shady places to sit and relax. There was, of course, the pool, sauna, massage and salon availabe to us as well. Within the confines of Majapahit's walls we were cushioned against the ugly intrusion of an Asian city and were subtly transported back to another era.
Dinner at Sarkies Restaurant was equal to the best anywhere in the world - meat dishes that melted in the mouth; subtle fusion flavours; and a refreshing choice of dish sizes, so we could mix and match to our heart's content.
Indigo Restaurant provided a substantial and varied breakfast, and it would be impossible to leave unsatisfied.
The staff - from reception and concierge, to housekeeping, restaurants and management - were friendly and welcoming without being intrusive. We felt like we were with family - a family that respected our privacy, but was there with a smile whenever we needed them.
The actual location of the hotel put us in immediate proximity to large shopping malls and even a local market, so when we wanted to venture from our oasis, Surabaya with all its charm was at our doorstep.
There are many things to see and do in and around Surabaya, but it is worth coming to Surabaya just to stay at this magnificent colonial tribute to Indonesia's history. You won't be disappointed.
